The way has been paved to provide welfare services to Nepali workers employed in India

After the Cabinet meeting approved the National Labour Migration Policy 2082 on the proposal of the Ministry of Labour, Employment, and Social Security, the way has been paved to register Nepali workers employed in the Indian labour market to provide them with welfare services.

According to the new policy passed by the Cabinet on 3 August 2025, Nepali workers going to India for employment will be included in social security programs and benefits through the Social Security Fund.

Nepali Embassy in UAE to regularize work permit legalization service

The Embassy of Nepal in the UAE will resume work permit legalization service for Nepali citizens working in the UAE starting from 18 August 2025.

The Embassy issued a notice on 10 August 2025 stating that this service will be regularly resumed.

According to the directive of the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security, only those Nepali workers who obtained their work visa before 30 September 2024 and are currently employed in Abu Dhabi will be eligible for this service.

Nepali Embassy in Kuwait urges not to consume risky food and beverages

The Embassy of Nepal in Kuwait issued a press release on 15 August 2025 stating that some Nepalis had died due to the consumption of toxic alcohol and 35 had been hospitalized, urging all not to consume hazardous and risky food and beverages harmful to health.

The press release did not specify the number of Nepalis who lost their lives. However, it is understood that at least nine Nepalis died after consuming toxic alcohol.

The Ministry of Health of Kuwait said that more than 160 people were affected due to the consumption of alcohol mixed with methanol, and among them, 23 had died.

IndustriALL Urges Prime Minister Sushila Karki to Protect Workers’ Rights in Nepal

Expressing concern that the Government of Nepal is moving toward restricting trade union activities, IndustriALL Global Union Headquarters in Geneva sent a letter to Prime Minister Sushila Karki on October 14, 2025, urging the government to protect workers’ rights and engage in constructive social dialogue with trade unions.

The letter highlighted that even the government-determined minimum wage has not been properly implemented, while under the banner of the Gen-Z movement, anarchic groups have attacked trade union offices, causing vandalism and looting of important materials.

IndustriALL emphasized that respect for workers’ and trade union rights, social dialogue, and collective bargaining are the foundations of a fair and democratic society. Therefore, it called on the Government of Nepal to:

  • Implement the agreed minimum wage without delay,
  • Ensure full respect for trade union rights and freedom of association,
  • Guarantee the safety of trade union offices and representatives, and
  • Work together with all trade unions in good faith to develop inclusive, fair, and sustainable policies for the future of Nepal.

16 Workers Killed in Massive Fire at Garment Factory in Bangladesh

At least 16 workers were killed in a massive fire that broke out at a garment factory in the Mirpur area of Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, on October 14, 2025. Authorities have warned that the death toll may rise further.

It took more than three hours for firefighters to bring the blaze under control in the four-story building. The Fire Service and Civil Defence Department reported that identifying the 16 recovered bodies has been difficult due to the extent of the damage.

Workshop on Labour Law Reform in South Asia Concludes

A workshop on Labour Law Reform in South Asia, jointly organized by ITUC, FNV, and SARTUC, was concluded on November 5, 2025, in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Presiding over the workshop, which began on November 3, GEFONT President and SARTUC Vice President Binod Shrestha highlighted the existing labour laws in Nepal and the reforms that need to be undertaken.
