GEFONT Far-west committee forms a team to rescue flood victims

A rescue team of 15 people has been formed under the leadership of GEFONT Far-western Province President Jit Malla for the rescue of flood victims in various places of Kailali district due to heavy rains for 4 consecutive days.

Provincial President Jit Malla has informed that the rescue team has carried out rescue operations in the submerged area and the operation is still ongoing in areas where the situation has remained unchanged.

GEFONT expresses sorrow for the loss due to plane crash.

The GEFONT family has been deeply saddened by the death of 18 technicians and crew members in the plane crash of Saurya Airlines on the morning of July 24.

GEFONT offers its deepest condolences to all the people who died in the accident and deep condolences to the bereaved families and wishes for the speedy recovery of the injured Captain Manish Ratna Shakya.
 

Extreme heat affects almost 70% of labourers .

The Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, has called to emphasise the safety of those who work and raise their families due to the effects of the rising temperature of the earth.

General Secretary Guterres gave this message when speaking at a press conference held at the UN headquarters in New York on Thursday, July 25.

He said, “The effects of the rising heat all over the world have not affected everyone equally. The poor, workers, displaced people, pregnant women, children, the elderly, and disabled people who are deprived of the facilities of living in cool weather are more affected.”

After July 21st, 2024, was measured as the hottest day on record, General Secretary Guterres asked everyone to be mindful about the workers' crisis.

According to a new report by the International Labor Organization (ILO), about 70 percent of people who do manual labour around the world are affected by extreme heat.

Training on Climate Change and Just Transition Concluded

A three-day training on climate change and just transition, organized by the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) Asia-Pacific, has been concluded.

The training, which began on August 21, 2025, was inaugurated under the chairpersonship of ITUC Nepal-affiliated Committee Coordinator and NTUC President Yogendra Kuwar. The program was attended by guests, including General Federation of Nepalese Trade Unions (GEFONT) President Binod Shrestha.

In the training, GEFONT Vice President Bidur Karki facilitated a session on environmental change campaigns and future action plans, while General Secretary Laxman Sharma facilitated a session on workers’ rights in just transition.

Similarly, sessions on green transition—its principles, issues, and challenges—as well as the Government of Nepal’s policies on climate change and just transition, were facilitated by Satoshi Tamai, Lotte Yligard, John Powell, and Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Forests and Environment Naresh Sharma.

ITUC-NAC Strategic Planning Workshop Concluded

The International Trade Union Confederation Nepal Affiliated Council (ITUC-NAC) and DTDA Denmark jointly organized a two-day Strategic Planning Workshop in Godawari, Lalitpur.

The workshop, chaired by ITUC-NAC President Yogendra Kuwar, started on August 24, 2025, and was attended by the Presidents, Vice Presidents, and General Secretaries of the General Federation of Nepalese Trade Unions (GEFONT), Nepal Trade Union Congress (NTUC), and All Nepal Trade Union Federation (ANTUF).

With the participation of DTDA Head Lotte Yligard and Program Officer John Paul, the workshop reviewed past activities and prepared program plans for 2026.
