Completion of Training on Legal Literacy and Trade Union Education.

The General Federation of Nepalese Trade Union (GEFONT) has completed a three-day training program for legal literacy and trade union education at the GEFONT Trade Union School, Anamnagar. The program was held from July 7 to July 9.

GEFONT President Binod Shrestha, while inaugurating the training program on July 7, said that the training can help increase competence of women workers and also help them get educated on labour laws.

During the three-day training program, GEFONT vice president Bidur Karki provided training on the subject of foundational trade union and leadership development, Sita Lama on gender and policy of GEFONT, General Secretary Laxman Sharma on the program and policy of GEFONT, and Bhakti Ghimire gave training on labour laws.

The program, which included 25 women from the districts of Saptari, Siraha, Dhanusha, Bara and Parsa was organised by Shankar Ghimire, while Basanta Thapa of ILO provided information on the importance of the program.

 

 

63rd meeting of GEFONT National Women’s Committee concludes

The 63rd meeting of the National Women’s Committee of the General Federation of Nepalese Trade Unions (GEFONT) was held at the GEFONT Central Office on November 14.

In the meeting chaired by Women’s Committee Chair Sita Lama, GEFONT Chair Binod Shrestha informed about the decisions of the National Committee meeting of GEFONT held on November 13 and directed the National and Provincial Women’s Committees to actively participate in the GEFONT Rejuvenation Campaign 2081 to be conducted by GEFONT from December to April.

The meeting has decided to celebrate the 16-day campaign against gender violence, International Working Women’s Day and other days by organizing various programs in all seven provinces.
 

GEFONT launches 16-day campaign against gender-based violence

The General Federation of Nepalese Trade Unions (GEFONT) has launched a 16-day campaign against gender-based violence nationwide.

On the first day of the campaign on November 25, GEFONT Bagmati Province Women’s Committee organized an orientation program on the implementation of GEFONT’s Code of Conduct against gender-based violence.

Launching the campaign, President Binod Shrestha requested not to understand gender-based violence unilaterally and not to follow rumors.

Women’s Committee President Sita Lama facilitated a discussion on ILO Convention 190, Vice President Kamala Tamang facilitated a discussion on GEFONT Women’s Policy and Secretary Bijaya Khadka facilitated a discussion on the situation of gender-based violence and the role of GEFONT. 

The program was chaired by GEFONT Province Women’s Committee President Shanti Karki.
 

Training on Gender-based violence against women at Work for Sanitation Workers

The General Federation of Nepalese Trade Unions (GEFONT) has conducted a training on Gender-based violence against women for sanitation workers working in the sanitation and waste management sectors of Kathmandu Metropolitan City and Tarkeshwor Municipality on December 14. The program was inaugurated by Mohan Nepali, President of the Nepal Garbage Cleaners Employee Union (NGCEU).

GEFONT Deputy General Secretary Naranath Luitel highlighted the issues related to Gender-based violence against women including GEFONT's Code of Conduct. The program was facilitated by Shankar Ghimire, the Project Coordinator of GEFONT.

Similarly, GEFONT completed a training on gender-based violence in the workplace for workers working in the sanitation and sanitation classification sectors in Tokha Municipality, Kathmandu on December 15.

GEFONT National Committee Member Thakur Kumar Shrestha inaugurated the program where GEFONT Deputy Secretary General Naranath Luitel and NGCEU President Mohan Nepali highlighted issues including GEFONT's code of conduct on gender-based violence. The program was facilitated by GEFONT Project Coordinator Shankar Ghimire.
