The General Federation of Nepalese Trade Unions (GEFONT) held a virtual interaction with migrant workers on December 18 with the main slogan "Regular Contribution to Social Security - Protection of Workers' Rights".
During the interaction program, GEFONT President Binod Shrestha wished all workers on the occasion of International Migrant Workers' Day. He informed that GEFONT, which has been active in many countries, has started its activities in Europe, America and Japan as well with the slogan "Where there are workers, there is GEFONT".
President Shrestha said that GEFONT has been demanding "employment with fair wages inside the country" for years and that the vision of making foreign employment a matter of choice instead of compulsion, remains. The interaction, facilitated by Foreign Affairs Secretary Smriti Lama, was attended by about 40 migrant workers from Malaysia, UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Japan and the US, along with GEFONT officials and secretariat staff.
The GEFONT Koshi Province Committee has started the campaign for rejuvenation in Jhapa from November 17.
At the orientation program held in Birtamod of Jhapa district under the chairmanship of GEFONT National Committee member Sant Kumar Rai, the chief guest GEFONT Secretary Hari Bahadur Karki shed light on the campaign and explained the team structure for the campaign, its duration, and the activities to be carried out within it.
The program was attended by National Committee member Bhim Jwala Rai, Koshi Province Committee President Kishore Dhamala, CPN-UML Jhapa District Committee Vice President Shiva Dhungel, and other guests including CUPPEC Vice President Ambir Lingden.
The General Federation of Nepalese Trade Unions (GEFONT) has published a fact sheet with information about Nepali workers who have gone abroad for employment in the past through a press conference at the GEFONT hall yesterday on the occasion of International Migrant Workers' Day on December 18 with the main slogan "Regular Contribution to Social Security - Protection of Workers' Rights".
While publishing the fact sheet, GEFONT President Binod Shrestha said that December 18 has been celebrated as International Migrant Workers' Day as a day to honor the contribution of workers who have gone abroad for employment around the world and raise their voices to protect their rights. This year, on December 18, GEFONT will organize various programs in the country and abroad with the slogan "Regular Contribution to Social Security, Protection of Workers' Rights". President Shrestha said that GEFONT has been demanding employment with fair wages inside the country itself for years, and that the vision of making foreign employment a matter of choice instead of compulsion, remains.
President Shrestha informed in a press conference that GEFONT, which is active in all destinations from Korea to Malaysia and Saudi Arabia, has been moving forward with the slogan ‘Where there are workers, there is GEFONT’ along with a campaign to organize migrant workers in Europe and America through the GEFONT Support Group since this year, and that the GEFONT Support Group in America has started its activities. Due to the mandatory social security contribution system for workers going for foreign employment, 1,300,1078 workers have been listed with their contributions. But, since their contributions are not regular, the workers themselves and their families have been deprived of the benefits available under the fund’s schemes. Therefore, GEFONT will change the slogan ‘Mission to Million’ adopted at its 8th general assembly to the “Mission to Million - with Regular Contribution” starting this year. GEFONT officials and secretariat were present at the press conference, which was moderated by GEFONT General Secretary Laxman Sharma.
On the occasion of GEFONT's rejuvenation campaign 2081 to be launched by the General Federation of Nepalese Trade Unions (GEFONT) from December 16, Central Union of Painters, Plumbers, Electro and Construction Workers Nepal (CUPPEC Nepal) Bardiya District Committee held a planning meeting on December 18 to mobilize its members and resources.
In the meeting held under the chairmanship of District President Kaviram BK, GEFONT National Committee Member Purna Bahadur KC highlighted the importance and objectives of the campaign.
Similarly, CUPPEC General Secretary Rajendra Bista highlighted contribution based social security as well as the conclusion of the 55th meeting of the Central Committee.
Central Secretary Padam Budhamagar, Central Member Maniram Dhungana and GEFONT Lumbini Province Member and Bardiya In-charge Durga Bahadur KC also participated in the meeting.
The General Federation of Nepalese Trade Unions (GEFONT) has launched the GEFONT campaign for rejuvenation in Siraha and Saptari districts of Madhesh Province from December 16.
GEFONT Secretary Tara Nidhi Pant, Madhya Pradesh President Kamlesh Jha, National Committee Member Arjun Adhikari and other local leaders participated in the campaign in both districts, which started on December 18. GEFONT Secretary Tara Nidhi Pant shed light on the campaign, explained the team structure for conducting the campaign, the duration of the campaign, and the activities to be carried out within the campaign.
The General Federation of Nepalese Trade Unions (GEFONT) has organized an interaction program with MPs on the Elimination of Forced Labor and ILO Protocol 29 on December 16.
In the program chaired by GEFONT President Binod Shrestha, CPN-UML Secretary and Parliamentary Department Head Yogesh Bhattarai said that forced labor is punishable and that it is necessary to eliminate forced labor for the construction of a civilized society. For this, he said, CPN-UML has always been in favor of decent wages and social security guarantees based on the contributions of workers and decent work. He also said that CPN-UML MPs will play a role in the parliament for the formulation, amendment and implementation of laws.
GEFONT President Binod Shrestha said that GEFONT has been working hard to eradicate forced labor in western Nepal for the past three decades, but with the changes in the current labor world, the nature of forced labor has also changed, and for this, discussions will have to continue in a new way. Vice President Bidur Karki presented a working paper on behalf of GEFONT in the program.
At the event, ILO representative Ram Sharmakar said that the Ministry of Labor is forming a committee to conduct a gap analysis regarding the laws that need to be amended.
CPN-UML central member and chief whip Mahesh Bartaila, whip Sunita Baral, and dignitaries Ishwari Gharti Magar, Bijula Rayamajhi, Nirmala Devkota, Rukmani Koirala, Deepa Sharma, Shanti Chaudhary, provincial assembly members Bindu Shrestha and Urmila Sunuwar, and GEFONT Vice President Sita Lama shared their views on forced labor at the program.
