The GEFONT family is shocked by the untimely demise of Comrade Dhan Bahadur Shrestha, a member of the Jute, Textile, Garment and Carpet Workers’ Union Nepal (JTG-CWUN), an affiliate of the General Federation of Nepalese Trade Unions (GEFONT) and a former member of the CPN-UML Workers Special District Committee, on November 7.
In this sad time, GEFONT has expressed its heartfelt tribute to late Shrestha and expressed its condolences to the bereaved family.
A brief tribute meeting was organized at Pashupati on November 11 before the cremation of the late Shrestha.
At the tribute meeting, CPN-UML Politburo member and GEFONT President Binod Shrestha draped the party flag.
Similarly, GEFONT Vice President Jitendra Shrestha and Sita Lama paid tribute by hoisting the GEFONT flag and JTG-CWUN President Arjun Adhikari paid tribute by hoisting the union flag.
Late Dhan Bahadur Shrestha, a resident of Ward No. 3 of Sailung Rural Municipality, Dolakha District, had been living in Kathmandu since 1989 for employment.
Late Shrestha passed away untimely on the way back from the Muktinath pilgrimage with his family on November 7.
The global effort to combat the climate crisis will not change unless there is a judicial transformation agenda and meaningful representation and dialogue of workers, said Laxman Sharma, General Secretary of the General Federation of Nepalese Trade Unions (GEFONT).
General Secretary Sharma made this statement at the national discussion program of civil society and consultants on the Climate Conference 2024 in Kathmandu on November 6.
General Secretary Sharma said that the issues of climate change and judicial transformation have been left out of the discussions held by civil societies, emphasizing the need to pay attention to green employment and social security.
Clarifying the strategies to be adopted to obtain the climate finance that Nepal should receive in a fair manner and to distribute it fairly, General Secretary Sharma said that there will be no climate justice without decent labor and green employment, social justice in the labor market, and judicial transformation.
During the program, GEFONT Vice President Sita Lama and National Committee Member Suman Parajuli raised issues including the impact of climate change on workers’ employment and the participation of workers’ representatives in the upcoming COP conference in Azerbaijan.
Nepalese Trade Union Federation (GEFONT) has congratulated and wished for joy, peace and prosperity to all Nepali brothers and sisters on the occasion of Chhath Parva 2081.
Chhath Parva, which is primarily celebrated in Terai and Madhesh regions by worshiping the Sun and Chhathi Mata, has recently been spreading in the Hilly and Himalayan districts including the Kathmandu Valley.
From this, it is clear that religion, culture, customs and festivals are enhancing mutual harmony and unity among all Nepalis.
With the belief that this festival will put an end to all kinds of discrimination include class, caste and gender and disharmony existing in the society, enhance national unity among all Nepalis, protect and promote the original culture and further strengthen mutual harmony, GEFONT wishes a happy Chhath Parva 2081 to all.
A total of Rs 67.64 billion has been collected from 1.732 million workers in various sectors under the contribution-based social security scheme.
Of those registered in the scheme, 1.191466 million are foreign-employed workers. Out of the Rs 67.64 billion collected by the Social Security Fund from contributing workers, Rs 11.37 billion has been paid under four different schemes, said the fund’s spokesperson, Bibek Panthi.
The fund has currently received the highest payment of Rs 9.62 billion under the old-age security claim payment, and Rs 1.41 billion under the medical treatment, health and maternity scheme.
Similarly, Rs. 181 million and Rs. 151 million have been paid under the dependent family security scheme and the accident and disability security scheme, respectively.
So far, 19,710 employers and 1,732,354 contributors have been registered in the fund.

General Federation of Nepalese Trade Unions (GEFONT) Far-west Province Committee formed a 7-member Bedkot Municipal Committee under the chairmanship of Jaya Bahadur Bohora in a labor meeting held on the 12th of September in Bedkot Municipality of Kanchanpur district.
CPN-UML central member Nar Bahadur Dhami was the chief guest of the event where GEFONT Far-west Province Committee Chairman Jit Malla, Independent Transport- Workers’ Association of Nepal central member Shankar Joshi, and other leaders addressed the meeting. The event was moderated by Daan Bahadur Bista, Joint Secretary of the Far-west Province Committee.
Similarly, in Belauri municipality of Kanchanpur district, a 9-member municipal committee was formed under the chairmanship of Sahabir Mahara at a labor meeting held on the 13th of September under the chief hospitality of GEFONT Far-west Province Committee Chairman Jit Malla.
The meeting was attended by leaders including GEFONT Labor Cooperative Promotion Committee member Chandra Ram BK, GEFONT Provincial
Committee member Kriti Bahadur Shahi, Kanchanpur District Coordination Committee coordinator Bhoj Bahadur Ayer and NATU Central Committee member Bishwa Luhar.
