On April 16, the Joint Trade Union Coordination Centre (JTUCC) expressed its gratitude to the Government of Nepal through the Minister for Labour, Employment, and Social Security, Sharad Singh Bhandari, for enforcing the provision that requires all contract and temporary employees working in any government body to be mandatorily enrolled in the contribution-based Social Security Fund.
The JTUCC leadership welcomed the provision announced in the Nepal Gazette on April 14, which mandates that employees receiving remuneration from the government treasury but not entitled to pensions must now be compulsorily included in the contribution-based Social Security Fund.
As per the Labour Regulations 2018 (2075 BS), the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security has published the list of various diseases contracted in the course of work in the Nepal Gazette on 11 August 2025, granting them legal recognition as “occupational diseases.”
Health problems observed in workers due to workplace dust, chemicals, noise, or the nature of work will now be addressed legally rather than as personal issues.
This will help secure the health rights of millions of workers and make employers more responsible for ensuring workplace safety.
Chapter 12 of the Labour Act 2017 (2074 BS) contains provisions related to occupational safety and health. If a worker contracts any occupational disease, the company/employer must provide the prescribed medical expenses for treatment and, if the disease is incurable, pay the prescribed compensation amount to the worker.
