Two trade union federations with their own historical background - Independent Textile Garment Workers’ Union of Nepal (ITGWUN) and Nepal Independent Carpet Workers’ Union (NICWU) were merged into one union Jute, Textile, Garment and Carpet Workers’ Union Nepal (JTG-CWUN) through a merger convention held on September 26, 2012. The union organises workers from garment, carpet, textile, spinning, hosier, washing, dyeing, embroidery, boutique, pashmina and similar sectors. The textile, jute and carpet industries are relatively weakened these days. So, GEFONT strategized to merge the unions to strengthen the trade union movement in these sectors. The federation is affiliated to IndustriALL global union.
