Workers from transport sector had initiated the movement for their rights with the beginning of the public transport. On June 23, 1979 transport workers organised a national gathering in Panipiya of Sunsari district and formed Independent Transport Workers’ Association of Nepal (ITWAN).
ITWAN is first and strongest union of this sector and is registered as third federation in Department of Labour as National Federation. Of the approximately 400,000 transport workers in the country majority is associated with ITWAN. In the 14 zones of the country the union has expanded in 13 zones except Karnali zone. At national level the union is affiliated to GEFONT and at international level it is affiliated with International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF).
As part of the Independent Transport Workers’ Association of Nepal (ITWAN) Lumbini Province Committee expansion campaign, a gathering held in Bhaluwang of Dang district on November 30 has formed an 11-member Bhaluwang-Pyuthan-Sitganga unit committee under the chairmanship of Ram Prasad Subedi.
The gathering, which was held under the chairmanship of Suman Raj Khanal and hosted by Thakur Prasad Gaire, Vice President of ITWAN Central Committee and Lumbini Province in-charge, was attended by Deputy General Secretary Khagendra Bahadur Wali, Advisor Coordinator Dhyan Bahadur Rai and other leaders.
The seventh convention of the Independent Transport- Workers’ Association of Nepal (ITWAN) Tanker Unit Committee was held in Nepalgunj on December 7 with the main slogan "Respect for labor and decent work, implementation of social security is our goal" and was held under the chief guestship of GEFONT National Committee member Purna KC. The convention has elected a 14-member working committee under the chairmanship of Bishnu Bohara.
The inaugural session of the convention, chaired by Unit Committee Chairman Kaviram Pun, was attended by the organization's central advisor Dhyan Bahadur Rai, Deputy Secretary General and Far West Province in-charge Khagendra Bahadur Wali, Far West Province President Lalit Chand, Lumbini Province Secretary Hum Bahadur Chhetri and Lumbini Province Member and Banke District in-charge Suman Giri Shrestha Additionally, heads of relevant offices, including president of the Petroleum Dealers Association, president of the Midwest Petroleum Transportation, heads of the Nepalgunj Labor and Employment Office, Social Security Fund Nepalgunj, as well as local people's representatives and journalists were present.
Independent Transport- Workers’ Association of Nepal (ITWAN) Budhanilkantha Micro Bus Unit Committee is going to provide cash relief of Rs. 27000/- to the organization's member driver Som Bahadur Sunar for health care.
The decision was taken at a meeting held on December 7 under the chairmanship of Unit Committee Chairman Manoj Bahadur Raut in the presence of Provincial Chairman Comrade Shankar Thapa, Secretary Shiv Kumar Shrestha, Joint Secretary Ganesh Bahadur Shrestha and Treasurer Dak Bahadur Raut.
The fifth convention of the Independent Transport- Workers’ Association of Nepal (ITWAN) Airport Taxi Unit Committee held on December 10 has elected a 17-member committee under the chairmanship of Duryodhan Basnet.
The convention held under the chief hospitality of Central President Bhimjwala Rai honored 11 drivers who honestly returned cash and goods left in taxis to passengers.
The program, which was chaired by Dil Bahadur Shakya, was hosted by Duryodhan Basnet and the welcome address was delivered by Ram Krishna Lamichhane.
The leadership of the Independent Transport- Workers’ Association of Nepal (ITWAN) and the Honorable Minister for Industries, Commerce and Supplies, Damodar Bhandari, held a discussion on the problems of workers in the tanker sector and self-employed workers at the ministry on December 12.
The organization's central office informed that Honorable Minister Bhandari said in the discussion that the ministry is committed to implementing the agreements reached in the past to resolve the problems of the workers.
