GEFONT President stresses on dignified domestic job creation
Cleaning and security workers at the BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences submitted a memorandum to the institute’s officials on May 28th. The memorandum demanded the continuation of the health card benefits that were discontinued by the institute, immediate payment of the increased minimum wage that has been in effect since last August, and the provision of remaining old salaries. The memorandum was submitted on behalf of the Nepal Security Workers Trade Union and the Nepal Cleaning Employees Union, affiliated with the General Federation of Nepalese Trade Union (GEFONT) to the Vice-Chancellor Dr. Gyanendra Giri, Registrar Surya Prasad Sangraula, Director Jagat Narayan Prasad Shah, and Dean Dr. Sanjib Sharma.
GEFONT National Committee member and Central President of the ITWAN, Bhimjwala Rai, handed over the memorandum, warning the officials that the achievements like the health card, gained through repeated movements and cooperation, are being gradually taken away. If the workers' issues are not addressed, another movement will be initiated.
Furthermore, the memorandum mentioned that it has been almost four years since the Labour Court ruled that the KTM Security Company must pay workers 10 Million for salaries and other benefits. However, the workers have not received this payment yet. Therefore, the amount should be deducted from the payment due to KTM Security Company by the institute and provided to the workers.
Vice-Chancellor Dr. Gyanendra Giri, while receiving the memorandum, assured that the issues would be addressed promptly so that the workers would not need to resort to further agitation.
Leaders present to submit the memorandum included GEFONT leader Bhimjwala Rai, Central Vice-President of the Nepal Garbage Cleaner employees Union (NGCEU) Yamkala Magrati, Dharan Municipal President Ganesh Yonghang, GEFONT Dharan Municipal President Shamsher Bardewa, President of the Nepal Security Service Trade Union (NSSTU) Janak Sunuwar, Vice-President Ratna Nembang, Secretary Prabin Rai, Central Member of the ITWAN Laxmi Baniya, and President of Security Workers Dharan Municipal Committee Gopi Yogi, among others.

4️⃣ The CUPPEC-Nepal Katari Municipality Committee organized an interaction with Katari Municipality on Sept 4, 2025, focusing on the Labour Desk, Social Security, and wage rate determination.

Women in Informal Employment: Globalizing and Organizing (WIEGO) has launched a 5-day TOT in Ahmedabad, India, starting September 1, 2025.

2️⃣ Tea Workers’ Wage Increase in Nepal
On September 1, 2025, the Nepal Tea Producers’ Association and trade unions agreed to raise wages for tea workers.
➡️ New Daily Wage: Rs. 565 (earlier Rs. 500)
➡️ New Monthly Wage: Rs. 15,699 (earlier Rs. 13,893)
This increase includes Rs. 39 in basic salary and Rs. 26 in dearness allowance daily.
Monthly increase: Rs. 1,162 in basic salary and Rs. 644 in dearness allowance.
According to Santa Kumar Rai, President of the Tea-Coffee Workers’ Union Nepal (TCWUN), the agreement will be published in the Nepal Gazette.
3️⃣ CUPPEC-Nepal Kailali Convention
The GEFONT-affiliated CUPPEC-Nepal Kailali District Committee decided on August 31, 2025, to hold its 8th District Convention by December 30, 2025.

Manahari Municipal Committee, Makwanpur, held a gathering on August 31, 2025.
Jhapa District Committee organized its ninth meeting under Nirananda Giri’s chairpersonship.
2️⃣ Security Worker Wins Benefits
Bhadra Bahadur Bhandari, a former security guard at Montessori Kinderworld, Tahachal, successfully received his service benefits.
The achievement came after union intervention by STUN, with an agreement reached on August 24 and full benefits received on August 30, 2025.
3️⃣ Transport Workers Raise Concerns
ITWAN Kalanki Unit drew attention to microbus and tempo fuel problems at the Traffic Police Office, Singha Durbar.
Drivers are fined for going off-route to refuel due to lack of gas depots on regular routes.
4️⃣ Health Volunteers’ Meeting
NEVA held a meeting in Simta Rural Municipality, Surkhet, chaired by Pavitra Thapa with participation from Central Member Bhimu Rijal.
5️⃣ Dang District ITWAN Meeting
ITWAN Dang District Committee held its first meeting after the fourth convention.
The meeting decided to strengthen the organization and launch campaigns on contribution-based social security until July 2026.
