International Conference on OSH kicks off

An International Conference on "Victim take the lead for Occupational Safety and Health in Asia" has been commenced in Kathmandu today.

During the Conference, President of GEFONT- Mr. Bishnu Rimal has shown a video on "Hope of Soul" and briefed about overall OSH situation in Nepal including role of Union in improving OSH in Nepal. He said “By enforcement of New Labour Law, the OSH situation might be improved.”

Likewise, Mr. Richard Howard, Country Director of ILO in Nepal explained about role of ILO on the OSH issue. Similarly,
Mr. Dev Raj Dhakal, Director General of Department of Labour explained about Labour Office activities in Nepal.

Meanwhile, Mr. Bishnu Lamsal, Secretary General of GEFONT welcomed all of the participants and Mr. Ripon Chaudhari of ANROEV highlighted the objective of the programme.

In the thematic Session, Mr. Janak Chaudhari, Deputy Secretary General of GEFONT briefed about Situation of OSH in Nepal. He highlighted historical steps taken by GEFONT to improve Safety and Health of Workers.

Mr. Ram Charitra Shah of CEPHED explained about status of Asbestos Ban in Nepal. Similarly, Ms. Omana George briefed about ANROEV network which was created 20 years back by Trade Unions including GEFONT and labour related organisations of Asia.

During the Conference, Mr. Ramesh Badal, Secretary of Department of Foreign Affairs of GEFONT highlighted the role of Trade Union including content of new Labour law on OSH in Nepal.

There are four different issues to be discussed like Diagnosis and Victim Compensation System, Asbestos Situation in Asia, Environmental Exposure of Chemicals, Regulatory Mechanism on OSH.

A two days Conference is jointly organise by GEFONT and ANROEV to discuss about OSH situation in Asia and Pacific Region. 125 Representatives from 16 Countries are participating in the conference.
