Mental Health & Stress management training for GEFONT youth leadership

Kathmandu, GEFONT has organized training on the mental stress and its management caused by COVID-19 to the youth leaders of union. Psychologist Ms. Jamuna Maharjan has facilitated the session.

Speaking at the inaugural session of the training, GEFONT President Cde. Binod Shrestha said that the role of trade unionists as a good conveyors to take the socity forward is the more important than ever. He said that the leaders of the trade unions should not only  demand increase in the salary facility and increase the numbership but also be a friend of the workers in their workplace in their hard time. He said it is important to discuss how to turn the current challenge into an opportunity.He has further Expressed the concern over the rising number of suicides cases in the country, presidnet Shrestha pointed out the need for assistance to the stressed workers as they have reached the stage of self-immolation due to dismissal. He also urged the youth leadership to identify potential problems facing GEFONT members and try to find a way to manage them. He has also inform that GEFONT will conduct discussion on mental health in throught out the provinces, he has also urged participants to share the learning experience to their colleagues & family.


 
On the occasion, GEFONT Secretary General Cde. Janak Chaudhary said that it is important for the responsible trade union leaders to understand and learn how to deal with mental stress. He further said that participants have to share their learning experience about mental health and stress mangement with in small groups of  colleguages also. 



In the training WSM Asia Coordinator Bruno said “ COVID-19 is an obstacle to important issues such as wage, job creation, social protection.  He said that instead of creating employment, some are losing their jobs and some have to return after losing their jobs from abroad. Also to overcome this situation  he express hope that those who lost their jobs would get employment through programs such as the Prime Minister's Employment Program. Stating that the training on mental stress and its management will help the union workers to reduce the problem, he also informed them about the current focus of WSM.



During the training, psychologist Jamuna Maharjan explained what stress is, its causes and types, its effects, and what needs to be done to reduce it.Youth leaders of various committees have participated in the traning.
